Here's a couple of pieces of fluff I wrote recently as entried in weekly challenges on a shortfic list I'm a  member of.  Sorry in advance to [personal profile] apiphile, who will probably throw rocks at the screen :)

Both stories involve Miles Edgeworth and Phoenix Wright, childhood friends estranged for 15 years and now sometime enemies, sometime rivals, sometime colleagues. Obviously characters etc. belong to Capcom.

Challenge: DREAMS
Title: Insomnia - for the prosecution!
Wordcount: 200
Warnings: Some angst involved (no shit, Edgeworth is in it). No spoilers. Non sexual Teh Gay.

Miles lay silently in bed, watching Phoenix sleep. He did this often.  He had suffered from insomnia since the nightmares started. Now, he had the nightmares much less often, but he still found sleep unwelcoming.  He liked to be in control. When he slept, his unconscious mind took over and he was no longer able to keep away the bad thoughts, and the sad thoughts. If sleep did overtake him it was always by stealth, never by invitation.

He didn’t suppose that Phoenix was aware that he spent so many nights just watching. But Miles found it somehow restful to watch his lover in repose. Phoenix welcomed sleep, and when he slept it truly was the sleep of the innocent. Even when Phoenix dreamed he looked blissful.

Miles yearned to share those dreams but he knew that in that respect they could never be as one. Their lives had taken such different courses that they would never be united beyond the edge of conscious thought. The closest that he could ever hope to be to his lover in the long hours of the night was to watch, wish, imagine and maybe, if he was lucky, be lulled to peace himself.

Challenge: YOUTH
Title: Let It Snow - for the defence!
Wordcount: 400
Warnings: None. No spoilers. All ages.

The District Court building was unusually quiet. It was snowing outside and most people had left early. Phoenix Wright was one of the few people still there, handing in a deposition on behalf of a client.

He caught sight of the snow through the window and felt a sudden desire to be outside. Memories of happy childhood days spent bundled in warm scarves and mittens having snowball fights with his friends rushed into his mind. With a wide grin he gave into the temptation and hurried his pace to dodge past the few people who were still lingering in the lobby.

Pushing out through the swing doors onto the steps, he stood still for a moment and let the flakes settle on his hair and his eyelashes. His sharp eyes spotted a solitary, familiar figure standing at the bottom of the steps. Edgeworth. The prosecutor seemed to be reading a newspaper, completely oblivious to either the weather or his observer.

A sudden childish urge overtook Phoenix and he reached down to scoop up a handful of snow. Rolling it into a firm ball he launched it down the steps with the accuracy of a seasoned veteran.

SMACK. The snowball hit the prosecutor between the shoulder blades and his head whipped round immediately, eyes flashing. “Wright!” The look of incredulous disbelief on the prosecutor’s face froze Phoenix to the spot.

I am so going to die.

Edgeworth was halfway up the steps before the defence attorney noticed the smirk and by then it was too late. He scrambled for the door but the prosecutor was faster and the next thing Phoenix felt was a large handful of snow being shoved down the neck of his jacket. “Ow! Edgeworth! No fair!” he gasped, the coldness taking his breath. His sulky response seemed to trigger a memory in the prosecutor because suddenly Edgeworth’s customary look of disdain melted into laughter.

Phoenix stood there gawping while damp trickled down his neck, but the prosecutor’s laugh was infectious, and they both ended up giggling like schoolboys on the empty steps.

Edgeworth recovered his composure first. “You never learn, Wright” he said as he brushed the snow from his leather gloves. He leaned forward abruptly and Phoenix backed up, suddenly alarmed. “Next time … run faster” hissed the prosecutor. With a wicked gleam and another smirk he turned on his heel and disappeared into the court.
