One of our friend's dogs had to be put to sleep today. Rescued from the pound on the eve of execution a year or so ago, little Sasha was scared of the world and bewildered by events.
In Mandy's home she blossomed into a beautiful girl who loved her walks and was easily led astray by Connor into the adventure of swimming (not that she took much encouragement once her motive of fancying a duck or a swan for lunch became obvious)!
Unfortunately earlier this year Sasha developed lymphoma. She was given a week or so to live but neither Mandy nor Sasha were taking that kind of prognosis lying down. The mantra became NOT TODAY, AND NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT and Sasha was referred to the vet hospital for chemotherapy.
Ever the little fighter, she went into remission and was looking superb last time we saw her in September. Sadly, this week, the cancer returned, and this time it did not respond to treatment.
Sasha was well loved by all the walkers in our little group for her soulful eyes and patient ways, mothering all the younger dogs and always looking out for everyone. She was the centre of Mandy's family and they will all, including her canine brother Cade, be missing her terribly right now.
She deserved longer to enjoy her time as a loved and wanted dog and it's a very sad time for all who knew her. Run free with the wind, Sasha - you'll be remembered by many, and every twitch of the reeds by the lake will make us wonder if you're in there stalking the wildfowl. XXX
